ICEM 2025 Workshop: AI for weather and energy forecasting – opportunities and applications

Workshop Title: AI for weather and energy forecasting – opportunities and applications
When: (Day 1) Tuesday, 3 June 2025 | 16:10–18:00 CEST
Where: Galzignano Terme Spa and Golf Resort, Sala dei Giganti

Session description:

High-quality forecast information is a vital tool for managing weather-related risks in the energy sector. From the growth of renewable energy to the electrification of heating, the demand for accurate and dependable meteorological forecasts is higher than ever.

The rapid rise of AI-driven weather forecasting systems presents exciting new possibilities. Cutting-edge models such as AIFS, GraphCast, and Pangu are now matching—or even surpassing—the performance of traditional physics-based numerical weather prediction (NWP) models.

This session will explore the implications of this transformative shift. Specifically, it will:

  • Provide an overview of the latest advancements in AI-based weather forecasting;
  • Examine the challenges, opportunities, and practical implications of applying these systems to meet the energy sector’s meteorological needs; and
  • Offer a forward-looking perspective on future developments in this fast-evolving field.

Join us for a dynamic discussion on this breakthrough technology and the promising future it brings.

Session leads:
Sue Ellen Haupt (NCAR & WEMC), Georges Kariniotakis (MINES ParisTech) and David Brayshaw (University of Reading)
