Celebrating 10 Years of WEMC: A Decade of Bridging Climate and Energy

This November 2025 marks a remarkable milestone — the 10-year anniversary of the World Energy & Meteorology Council (WEMC).

Over the past decade, WEMC has become a trusted international organisation supporting the global energy transition by advancing collaboration between climate science and energy practitioners. Through innovative projects, partnerships, and open-access tools, WEMC continues to empower decision-makers with climate intelligence that drives sustainable and resilient energy systems.

From Vision to Impact

WEMC’s journey began in 2015 with its contribution to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)’s European Climatic Energy Mixes (ECEM) proof-of-concept project, led by WEMC Managing Director Professor Alberto Troccoli. This initiative laid the foundation for the operational climate services that followed, connecting world-leading organisations such as EDF, Météo-France, the Met Office, the University of Reading, and ENEA.

Building on this foundation, WEMC went on to lead and contribute to a series of C3S projects that brought climate and energy data to life through innovative visualisation tools and stakeholder engagement.  One of these was the C3S Climate and Energy Edu Demo, developed through close interaction with high-school teachers and students, which laid the groundwork for what is now the Teal tool.

Growth Through Collaboration and Innovation

The following years saw WEMC expand its reach and impact, playing a key role in several major European and international projects. Among these, SECLI-FIRM project demonstrated the economic value of tailored climate services, while the FOCUS-Africa project– successfully completed this year 2025– marked a significant step forward in regional adaptation and energy, as well as agriculture, resilience.

In FOCUS-Africa, WEMC was instrumental in helping partners develop Teal-Africa, a regional climate and energy data platform enabling users to explore trends and inform decision-making across sectors.

Collaboration has always been central to WEMC’s mission. For a few years, WEMC supported several working groups participated by leading experts in weather, climate and energy, with the purpose to improve the way meteorological information is used in the energy sector. Most recently, WEMC has been supporting the Reanalysis Working Group (RWG), a self-organised network of engineers and scientists from the wind energy, power systems, and marine sectors. The RWG fosters cooperation between reanalysis centres and end-users to enhance the quality and use of reanalysis data – historical weather and climate data combined with models – for the energy community.

Today, WEMC continues to build on this collaborative spirit through ambitious initiatives and EU projects such as the CROSSEU and FOCI , both of which advance its mission to foster equitable, science-based climate action, across Europe, extending impact outside the energy sector.

Teal: From One Project to Global Impact

A special highlight of WEMC’s decade-long journey is the development of Teal, its flagship climate and energy data exploration tool.

Originally launched as an educational demonstrator under the C3S programme, Teal has since evolved into a growing global platform for climate awareness and data-driven insight. Through ongoing collaboration with research partners and institutions, Teal now supports users across regions, from Europe to Africa, with accessible, science-based information.

To deepen engagement, WEMC has also launched the Teal Webinar Series, designed to showcase real-world applications of the tool, connect users from academia and industry, and inspire broader understanding of the link between climate data and everyday decisions.

We are proud to see Teal continue to grow, not only as a platform but as a community of practice shaping how people explore and act on climate information.

A Community of Passion and Expertise

None of WEMC’s achievements would have been possible without its dedicated and diverse team – spanning academia, data science, communication, and policy – or without the invaluable contribution of colleagues, partners, and members across the world.

As part of this wider community-building effort, WEMC has also organised numerous stakeholder workshops and webinars through its various projects —such as C3S Energy and SCELI-FIRM— strengthening collaboration and enhancing climate –data literacy across sectors.

The Next Decade

Alongside project work, WEMC continues to nurture its flagship event – the International Conference on Energy and Meteorology (ICEM). Celebrating –—its 8th edition in June 2025 under the theme ‘Contributing to the Net Zero Emission Target’, ICEM remains a cornerstone of WEMC’s mission to bridge science, industry, and policy for a sustainable energy future. Bringing together researchers, energy practitioners, policymakers, climate service providers, and international organisations, ICEM provides a unique platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration across sectors that rarely meet but urgently need to work together.

In parallel, WEMC’s spinoff, Inside Climate Service (ICS), plays a key role in translating WEMC’s scientific innovations into commercial solutions. This close collaboration helps bring WEMC’s tools and methods to wider markets, ensuring they deliver impact well beyond the research community.

Reflecting on this journey, Professor Alberto Troccoli, WEMC Founder and Managing Director, shares:

“The past decade has been an incredible journey, building trust, partnerships, and solutions that truly connect climate science with societal needs. As we look ahead, WEMC will continue to lead through innovation and collaboration, helping accelerate the transition to a sustainable, net-zero world.”

As WEMC celebrates this 10-year milestone, we look forward with renewed determination, to deepen collaboration, expand global partnerships, and drive innovation in climate services that empower societies toward net-zero, resilience and climate security.
